Kelvin Fletcher and Martin Plowman will move up to the British GT’s GT3 division this year after claiming GT4 honours in 2019.

The duo will race a Bentley Continental GT for JRM, marking the first time Emmerdale actor Fletcher has raced GT3 machinery, and the first time former IndyCar racer Plowman has since he competed in the 2016 Blancpain Sprint Cup in a Mclaren.

“We’ve been in GT4 for three years and we very much wanted to move onto the bigger category and thankfully this year we’ve been able to do that,” Fletcher said at Autosport International after hotfooting it to the NEC in Birmingham from BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen where the 2020 racing programme was announced.

“Martin’s been there, he’s vastly experience in the GT category so he knows what a GT3 is like and for me it’s a completely new experience and a real gift to be allowed an opportunity with JRM and with Bentley to participate in GT3 and in the British GT,” added the Strictly Come Dancing champion.

After narrowly missing out on the GT4 crown in 2018 while racing a Nissan 370Z, the pair moved to the Beechdean Aston Martin squad. There they won three races and scored points in every round on their way to the title.

For Plowman, a veteran of open wheel racing in America, prototype racing at Le Mans – where he was a class winner in 2013 – and international sports car racing, the partnership with the ‘celebrity’ driver has brought him great enjoyment over their three years together.

“This has been a dream come true for me,” Plowman said of his partnership with Fletcher. “For me this feels like a second career, it’s such an honour to be partnered with him. He’s a very very talented driver in his own right.

“He listens, which is very nice, but he’s such a humble guy, very hard working, and not one of those celebrity types that you think of. He’s truly down-to-earth, one of the boys. When he gets to the track he just wants to race, he wants to learn, and he wants to be the best he can be.”
